Five Must See’s in Samoa
Alofaaga Samoa Blowholes
Located in Taga Village, on the southern point of Savai’i Island, Alofaaga Samoa Blowholes are a spectacular sight where the ocean forces jets of water hundreds of metres into the air. Created by ocean waves pushing through a series of lava tubes, the geysers that result are impressive. You can pay locals to summon the waves and throw coconuts into the Jet or you can do it yourself. Just don’t pay above ST10.
Although you shouldn’t venture too close, these jets make amazing photographs, an Instagram-worthy opportunity.
Saleaula lava field
Samoa’s Saleaula Lava Field is steeped in history, with lava from the 1905-1911 Mt. Matavanu eruption burying five villages. Among the lava mounds, you’ll find a half-buried church, an untouched grave and stunning lava patterns. It’s also a great spot for a picnic, where children often chase the resident chickens. The virgin grave, said to have been spared by lava due to the girl’s purity, adds to the site’s mystique.
Do go chasing waterfalls
There is no better place to go chasing waterfalls than Samoa. Multiple waterfalls are available for tourists to admire, photograph and swim under. Among these are Sopoaga Falls on Upolu Island which is the largest waterfall in Samoa with easy access, Afu Aau Falls on Savai’I Island for crystal clear swimming conditions, Papapapai-Uta Waterfall – best admired from afar, Togitogiga Waterfall which is perfect for a refreshing swim after the coastal hike and Fuipisia Waterfall, a giant and dramatic waterfall nestled into lush tropical greenery.
Piula cave pool
Come for a cool dip in this enchanting underwater cave! There is a little chapel at the top of the cave mouth where you can enter two blue-green freshwater caves. The water has plenty of fish, but fishing is prohibited. If you’re brave you can swim between the two caves via a 3-meter underwater passage that can be hard to locate in the darkness, so bring your waterproof torch.
To-Sua Ocean Trench
One of Samoa’s most famous attractions, To-Sua, meaning “giant swimming hole”, is must-see. A 30-meter descent via wooden ladder leads to a stunning blue pool with a cave that opens to the sea. Swimming inside, surrounded by lush rock walls, is unforgettable. The area is also home to beautiful gardens and nearby Fagaoneone Beach, perfect for a picnic.
