Inside Scoop: Our Holiday Expert’s Escape to Anaheim and Beyond
We caught up with Holiday Expert, Brooke Robertson, to hear all about her recent trip to Anaheim, Los Angeles and Hawai’i. From rooftop cocktails to surf-side yoga, here’s her inside scoop.
How did you get to USA?
“We travelled via Hawai’i with Hawaiian Airlines which was such a great way to see more of the USA. You can plan a stopover either side of your Anaheim trip — Hawai’i is perfect for relaxing, swimming, surfing, shopping and even catching the new Cirque du Soleil show. On our flight from Sydney to Honolulu, we were upgraded to ‘Extra Comfort’ Economy seats which gave us more legroom, an amenity kit and in-flight Starlink Wi-Fi to stay connected.”
Where did you stay in Hawai’i?
“We stayed at the Ilikai Hotel & Luxury Suites, famous for appearing in the opening credits of the original Hawai’i 5-0. Our Junior Suite overlooked the pools and marina, and the location was ideal — right next to Hilton Hawai’ian Village. Friday nights were a highlight with free fireworks from Hilton and a traditional luau at the hotel. Families will love the two pools, daily complimentary ice cream and spacious suites.”
What were your favourite dining spots in Hawai’i?
- “Maui Brewing Company at Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber — Hawai’i’s largest craft brewery with open-air dining, live music, and classic favourites like burgers and pizzas.”
- “Tiki’s Bar & Grill overlooking Waikiki Beach — I loved the Kalua Pork Quesadillas and cocktails here.”
- “International Marketplace — three levels of dining and shopping including the Hawai’ian Cookie Company (perfect for gifts if you don’t eat them first!).”
What did you do in Hawai’i?
“The standout was the brand-new Cirque du Soleil show Auana at Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber. It’s a 10-year residency and celebrates Hawai’ian culture through acrobatics, surfing and the land and sea. The theatre is intimate so every seat has a great view.”
How did you get to Anaheim?
“We flew from Honolulu into Long Beach Airport which is much smaller and easier to navigate than LAX. It’s closer to Anaheim too so you get to your hotel faster.”
How did you get around Anaheim?
“We used Karmel Transfers for airport and hotel transfers — they’re reliable, modern and spacious. They even offer a Citadel Shopping Tour where you can store your luggage, shop with extra discount vouchers and then be taken straight to the airport. We also used the ART bus network to get around town, the FRAN network for free rides through downtown Anaheim, and Uber for quick trips between hotels and restaurants.”
Where did you stay in Anaheim?
- “Cambria Suites Anaheim: Family-friendly with a great pool, water slides, dive-in movies and modern rooms. Breakfast was included daily.”
- “JW Marriott Anaheim: An opulent five-star hotel with a rooftop bar where we toasted champagne as fireworks lit up the sky.”
- “We also inspected other hotels including Desert Palms Hotel & Suites, Best Western Plus Stovall’s Inn and Hyatt House — all great options depending on budget and style.”
What were your favourite dining spots in Anaheim?
- “The Cheesecake Factory on Garden Walk: Classic American dining with huge cake slices.”
- “Rise Rooftop Lounge: Stylish rooftop bar with firepits, cocktails and share plates.”
- “Golden Road Brewery: Local craft beer and hearty pub fare.”
- “Anaheim Packing District: A foodie’s paradise with everything from grilled cheese to Cajun bites.”
- “En Familia: A Mexican steakhouse near the Packing District with incredible tacos and chicken mole.”
What else did you do in Anaheim?
“We ventured out to Huntington Beach for yoga on the sand and a Duffy Boat ride at Huntington Harbour. Shopping was also a highlight — Target, Walmart and Walgreens are all nearby and worth a visit.”
Did you visit any theme parks?
“Yes, Knotts Berry Farm is just 20 minutes from Anaheim. It’s full of thrill rides and has a locals’ vibe. I braved the Silver Bullet rollercoaster — 22 seconds of absolute terror for me but joy for everyone else! We also made time for Disney, where the magic of Main Street and classic attractions added a whimsical contrast to the adrenaline…a perfect mix of thrills and enchantment.”
Did you explore LA?
“We did the Warner Brothers Studio Tour and it was incredible. We saw backlots from Gilmore Girls, ER, Friends and more. There’s also a Harry Potter exhibit where you can try on the Sorting Hat (I’m officially Slytherin). Sundays are quieter but weekdays give you a chance to see filming in action.”
Final insider advice for travellers heading to Anaheim?
“Comfortable sneakers are essential as you’ll walk miles every day. Pace yourself, plan for breaks and explore beyond the parks. Anaheim is more than Disney, it’s rooftop cocktails, craft breweries, beach yoga and Hollywood backlots. With a little planning you’ll experience the best of Southern California.”
