Pack Like a Pro: What to Bring On Your Next Tropical Holiday
About to jet off on an amazing tropical holiday, but not sure what you need to take? Take the stress out of packing and check out our list of everything you need to ensure your beach getaway is one to remember.
Must-Have Clothing
We’re sure you already have an idea of what clothing you’d like to pack on your amazing tropical holiday, but here are a few must-haves. Just make sure to pack enough outfits for the length of your trip, unless you’re planning to do laundry whilst away.
Lightweight Clothing: If you’re heading on a tropical holiday, you’ll want your clothing choices to be light and breezy. Think linen button-ups that will protect you from the sun and, of course, a few pairs of comfy shorts.
Swimwear: While this may be rather obvious, we do recommend packing more than one swimsuit in your suitcase. That way, you always have one ready to throw on while the other is drying. For some extra sun protection, consider also packing a rash vest, especially if you’re travelling with the kids.
Sarong: In addition to swimwear, we also recommend packing a swim cover-up for those moments when you’re out of the water. A sarong is a great choice for this, as it can double up as a beach blanket, plus can be used to cover your shoulders or legs if you’re visiting any sacred sites, such as the temples of Bali and Thailand.
Light Jacket: Just because you’re heading on a tropical getaway, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pack some layers! You’ll want to have a light jacket on hand in case the weather dips in the evening, or a rain jacket if you’re visiting during your destination’s wet season.
Sandals or Thongs: Nobody likes the feel of sand in their shoes. So, ditch the sneakers and opt for a pair of durable sandals or thongs instead. Perfect for protecting your feet from the hot tropical sand, be sure to pack a pair that you don’t mind getting wet or dirty.
Water Shoes: It’s not uncommon to find rocks and coral scattered across those pristine stretches of white sand beach. If you plan on visiting any stony beaches, consider packing a pair of water shoes to protect your feet as you step in and out of the water.
Tropical Essentials
Being a tropical getaway, you’ll probably spend most of your time pool or oceanside. Even if your idea of a beach day involves little more than lazing in the sun, there are a few basic items that you’ll want to pack in your bag.
Sunscreen: If you only pack one thing in your beach bag, make sure it’s sunscreen. To best protect you from the sun’s sharp rays, opt for a water-resistant, broad-spectrum formula that’s SPF 30 or greater. You’ll also want a reef-friendly sunscreen that doesn’t use oxybenzone and octinoxate, two ingredients that are banned in numerous destinations, including Hawaii. Always pack an extra bottle of sunscreen in your beach bag (it’s often cheaper to purchase in Australia) and reapply every two hours and after getting out of the water.
Sunglasses: While sunglasses are the perfect accessory for any beach look, they are also essential to protect and care for your eyes. Opt for a pair of polarised glasses to best reduce glare and provide extra clarity. We also recommend packing an extra pair – it’s always good to have a backup in case you lose or break a pair.
Hat: The sun protection doesn’t stop there! Don’t forget to pack a wide-brimmed hat, which is ideal for protecting your face and scalp from getting burnt, preventing sunburn and keeping the sun out of your eyes.
Beach Towel: Your chosen resort may provide these for you, so be sure to check before packing your bags. If not, we recommend splurging on a Turkish or microfibre towel, both of which are known to be lightweight, fast drying and sand-free.
Water and snacks: Nobody wants to be dehydrated on holiday. If you’re headed to the beach, bring enough water to last the whole day, along with some snacks for when you’re feeling peckish. Consider packing a cooler bag to keep everything cold.
Beachside Fun
If you’re going to be spending a lot of time on the beach, you may wish to pack a few extras in your suitcase. While they aren’t essential, they may help make your tropical holiday all the more memorable.
Beach Chair and Umbrella: If you’re holidaying at a beachfront resort, odds are that there will be plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas available for use. However, if you’re planning on hitting up any quieter, local beaches, consider packing a foldable beach chair or portable umbrella to make your day at the beach more comfortable.
Beach Games: Why not make your tropical getaway extra fun by bringing a beach ball, frisbee or even a pack of cards? These are all great ways to stay entertained during your beach day, especially if you’re travelling with the family. Remember, if you’re booking with My Fiji, you’ll receive a stylish beach bag stocked with a bunch of beach essentials, including an inflatable beach ball, perfect for a game of beach volleyball or soccer.
Snorkel and Mask: Many tropical destinations, such as Vanuatu and the Maldives, are blessed with spectacular fringing reefs just steps from the beach – we highly recommend bringing a snorkel and mask to explore these! While many resorts and tour operators do provide these, you may wish to pack your own for peace of mind.
Portable Speaker or Headphones: No beach day is complete without some good tunes. Think about packing a portable speaker or a pair of good-quality headphones so that you can listen to your favourite songs all day long.
Waterproof Camera: Capture the memories you’re sure to make on your tropical holiday – without worrying about dropping your camera in the water! If you’re not able to splurge on an underwater camera, there are plenty of cases that can protect your existing camera or smartphone from water damage.
A Good Book: A beach holiday offers a great opportunity to finally read that book you’ve been meaning to for months. Before you go away, stock up on reads at your local library or bookstore or, if you have one, load up your e-reader.
