Samoa’s people have followed Christianity since John Williams brought missionaries in the 1830s. While other religions exist, most Samoans are Christian. Sunday services, marked by beautiful music and singing, are a key weekly event, and the day is dedicated to rest and family time.
In Samoan culture, food is central to social gatherings, bringing families and communities together. Seafood plays a key role, often served as the evening meal from the day’s catch. Pork and chicken are typically cooked whole on hot rocks, while taro, tropical fruits and vegetables are also staples. Coconut, abundant on the islands, is used in many traditional dishes. Though simple in flavour, Samoan cuisine is rich, delicious and worth savouring.
Tattooing, or Tatua, has long been an important cultural practice in Samoa, symbolizing dedication to Fa’a Samoa and serving as a mark of status and respect. While based on a traditional style, each tattoo is uniquely tailored to the individual.
