Samoa offers fantastic dive sites both inside its protective reefs and beyond. The calm lagoons are perfect for beginners, while the deeper, more challenging sites attract experienced divers. The water remains warm year-round, averaging 28°C. Several companies offer diving tours to various sites and beginners can train at a local scuba school using the shallow lagoons.  

Snorkel in Samoa

Snorkelling in Samoa is an easy way to explore vibrant marine life, with many protected lagoons accessible from the beach or by boat. The reefs offer calm waters for beginners, while deeper spots cater to experienced snorkelers. Proper-fitting gear is essential for safety and comfort and resorts or local shops can help with equipment. Several tour companies also offer snorkel excursions. Top snorkelling spots include Palolo Deep Marine Reserve near Apia, accessible from the beach and southern Upolu locations like Salamumu and Savaia. On Savai’i, Falealupo and Manase Beach are must-visits. The best snorkelling conditions occur during the dry season, May to October, when the water is visibility optimal, as rainfall is lower. The warm water temperature of 28°C makes Samoa ideal for year-round snorkelling, though the wet season, November to April, brings more rainfall and occasional storms.  

Surfing in Samoa

Samoa offers perfect tubes and empty reef breaks, making it a dream destination for experienced surfers. The rugged, untamed waves are ideal for those seeking a challenge, especially on the southern coast of Upolu. Most resorts offer guided surf tours to the best spots. The dry season, from May to October, brings the biggest waves, sometimes over three meters, making it the best time of year to surf. With few surf shops, it’s best to bring your own board. You’ll enjoy clear, warm waters mostly to yourself. A small fee is paid to local villages, supporting local schools. For consistent waves, head to Upolu’s south coast, or venture to Savai’i for off-the-beaten-path breaks. Fun fact, while Hawaii is often credited as surfing’s birthplace, Samoans were the original surfers, a tradition dating back thousands of years!
