Insider Scoop: Laura’s Cook Islands Holiday
Looking for a tropical escape with breathtaking views, warm hospitality and endless adventure? Recently home from her unforgettable Cook Islands trip, we caught up with Holiday Expert, Laura, who shared her top tips to help you plan your perfect tropical getaway. Here’s what she had to say:
What were the highlights of your trip?
“Aitutaki’s One Foot Island was absolutely breathtaking. The crystal-clear waters and stunning scenery made it feel like paradise. I also loved the Koka Lagoon Cruise – the snorkelling and entertainment were fantastic. But honestly, the people were the real highlight. The locals, resort staff and chauffeurs were all so warm and welcoming.”
Which resorts would you recommend?
“For a luxurious stay, I’d recommend Aitutaki Private Island Resort, Motu Art Villas and Ocean Escape Resort – they’re all amazing. If you’re travelling with kids, The Rarotongan and Edgewater Resort are perfect choices. They have great facilities and plenty of activities to keep the little ones entertained.”
Where did you find the best views?
“Aitutaki! Hands down, everything there is beautiful. The views are just unreal. One of my favourite experiences was the Sunset Flight with Air Rarotonga – seeing the islands from above, especially between Aitutaki and Rarotonga, was truly unforgettable.”
What surprised you most about the Cook Islands?
“Even though I travelled during the wet season, the water was still so clear and beautifully blue – I didn’t expect that. Also, I was surprised by how many stunning spots there were to explore beyond the beaches.”
What would you do differently next time?
“Next time, I’d definitely stay longer in Aitutaki to soak in more of its beauty. I also want to try more of the local cafes and restaurants and maybe hire a guide to hike the mountains and see a different side of the islands.”
What were your favourite meals?
“The buffet at Club Raro was amazing – a great way to try local dishes. Trader Jacks was another favourite for a great meal outside the resorts. Oh, and the chicken curry at The Rarotongan was delicious! Fresh fish was also a must-have every day.”
What are your must-pack items?
“Definitely sunscreen and a hat – the sun is strong! Don’t forget your swimmers, you’ll be in the water a lot. New Zealand Dollars are handy since that’s the currency they use, and I’d also suggest bringing or buying a sarong – they’re super versatile.”
Who would you recommend the Cook Islands to?
“Honestly, the Cook Islands are perfect for everyone. Couples would love Aitutaki – it’s so romantic and ideal for a honeymoon. Families will enjoy Rarotonga with all the resort activities. And if you’re into adventure, there’s so much to do, from snorkelling and kayaking to exploring the nightlife.”
