10 Bucket List Experiences in Western Australia
Craving a holiday filled with adventure? The wonders of Western Australia await.
Brimming with natural riches, fascinating culture and a premium food and wine scene, there are endless experiences to be had in Western Australia – many of which you can’t find anywhere else.
Here are 10 incredible experiences to add to your Western Australia bucket list.
Swim with gentle whale sharks along Ningaloo Reef
Did you know that Western Australia is home to the largest fringing reef in Australia? Ningaloo Reef stretches 300 kilometres across the Coral Coast and is home to over 500 tropical fish species and 300 species of coral, along with marine life like sea turtles, dugongs, manta rays and reef sharks.
Ningaloo Reef is truly spectacular; a place to witness passing parades of marine life and enjoy bucket list experiences, like swimming with whale sharks. Visit between March and August for your best chance of having this unforgettable experience.
Explore the Pinnacles Desert
Pay a visit to Nambung National Park, where you can walk amongst the mysterious moonscape of the Pinnacles. Formed over a period of millions of years, the Pinnacles are made up of thousands of tall lunar-like spires that rise out of Nambung National Park’s golden sands.
The Pinnacles Desert can be explored via a number of walking and driving trails. Located just two and a half hours from Perth, choose to hire a 4WD for the day or let someone else take the wheel and join a guided tour.
Relax on one or more of Perth’s pristine beaches
As the sunniest state capital in Australia, Perth/Boorloo is not only packed with adventure, but is also the perfect destination for a laidback beachside holiday. Along the city’s 80-kilometre coastline, you’ll find 19 beautiful beaches, each boasting sugar-soft white sands and transparent blue waters.
Some of the most popular beaches in Perth include City Beach, Cottesloe Beach, Coogee Beach and Scarborough Beach. Whichever beach you choose, be sure to stay to watch the sunset over the horizon, turning the sky into brilliant shades of orange and gold.
Discover the jewel-like caves of the Margaret River Region
While the Margaret River Region may be best known for its premium food and wine scene, there is far more to discover beneath the surface. In fact, the Margaret River Region is home to an extraordinary network of 150 limestone caves, some dating back as far as one million years.
Many of these complex cave systems are open to the public, including Mammoth Cave, which houses the ancient fossil remains of long-extinct Australian megafauna. We also recommend joining a tour of Ngilgi Cave, where you will learn about the striking stalactites and stalagmites, and have the option to crawl through the famous tunnel of doom!
Witness a striking sunset on a camel ride along Cable Beach
Sunsets along the Kimberley Coast are a sight to behold. There’s no better place to witness these sunsets than from the back of an unhurried camel on Cable Beach/Walmanyjun, in the tropical oasis of Broome/Rubibi.
Of course, there is far more than just camel rides to enjoy on Cable Beach! Get adventurous with water sports like jet skiing and tubing, charter a boat to cruise along the coast or simply relax in the shade of a beach umbrella.
Take a selfie with a quokka on Rottnest Island
No visit to Western Australia is complete without visiting Rottnest Island/Wadjemup. Just 19 kilometres off the coast of Perth, this protected nature reserve is home to an abundance of unique flora and fauna, including the most famous resident, the quokka. These curious creatures will likely come right up to you, so be sure you have your camera ready to snap a selfie!
As a car-free zone, Rottnest Island is best explored by hiring a bicycle. That way, you can easily explore the many white-sand beaches and dive into the pristine waters, which are teeming with coral reefs and shipwrecks, perfect for snorkelling.
Tour the Willie Creek Pearl Farm
Visiting a working pearl farm in Broome is another incredible Western Australian experience. Since the 1880s, this laidback town has attracted pearl divers from across the globe, creating the thriving multicultural community of today.
For the ultimate pearling experience, head to Willie Creek Pearl Farm. Led by a knowledgeable guide, your tour will demonstrate the processes of Broome’s pearl industry, from the seeding of an oyster to the harvesting and grading of a pearl. End with a visit to the jewellery showroom, where you can shop for the perfect souvenir!
Go wine tasting in the Swan Valley
Food and wine lovers need to add the Swan Valley to their Western Australia bucket list. Just 25 minutes from Perth, this is the oldest wine region in the state. Here, you can explore over 150 attractions, including over 40 world-class wineries, 10 breweries, five distilleries, and three cideries, along with gourmet restaurants, art galleries and local markets.
To help you navigate all there is to eat, drink and explore in the Swan Valley, choose from a series of themed trails. Whether you’re interested in sampling fortified wine or treating yourself to some sweet temptations, there’s a curated Swan Valley experience to suit every type of foodie!
Step back in time at the World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison
For an insight into historic Western Australia, be sure to visit Fremantle/Walyalup. This laidback town is just 30 minutes from Perth and is home to the infamous Fremantle Prison, one of the state’s premier cultural heritage sites. Built by convicts in the 1850s, Fremantle Prison was used as a place of incarceration for 136 years before being decommissioned in 1991.
Enhance your visit by joining one of three expert-led guided tours, each of which walks you through the stories of convict and prison life. You can also opt to tour the tunnels deep within the prison, including some water-filled sections that you’ll navigate in replica convict punts.
Take flight over Hutt Lagoon
Western Australia is home to plenty of unique natural wonders, including the iconic Hutt Lagoon – a pink lake found in the beachside village of Port Gregory. The best way to see the incredible hues of this phenomenon is from above on a scenic flight. These flights frequently depart from Kalbarri, offering sweeping views of Hutt Lagoon, otherworldly coastline and spectacular gorges.
Return from your flight and fill your itinerary as you step out onto the 100-metre-high Kalbarri Skywalk/Kaju Yatka, with amazing views across the Murchison River gorge and surrounds. No trip to Kalbarri is complete without a hike to Nature’s Window – an iconic natural attraction found in Kalbarri National Park – where you can gaze out across the horizon through eroded sandstone.
