Hong Kong FAQs
Hong Kong is a year-round destination, but most travellers find that October to early December offers the best conditions, with mild temperatures, low humidity and clear skies ideal for sightseeing. Spring (March to May) is also pleasant, though it can be humid and foggy at times. Summer (June to September) brights high heat, heavy rain and higher chance of typhoons, so its best avoided unless you don’t mind the weather. Winter (December to February) is cool and dry, making it comfortable for outdoor exploring.
Australian passport holders can enter Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days, provided your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your stay. You’ll need proof of onward or return travel and must have enough funds for your visit. Always check Smartraveller and local authorities for the latest entry requirements.
Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong dollar (HKD). Cards are widely accepted, and ATMs are easy to find throughout the city, although carrying some cash is helpful for small shops, markets or local eateries. Bank notes come in denominations of HK$10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1000, and coins range from 10 cents to HK$10.
Hong Kong has two official languages: Chinese and English. Cantonese is the primary spoken language across the city, used by most locals in daily life, while English is common in tourism, business and public signage – making it easy for Australian travellers to navigate. You’ll also hear Mandarin and a mix of other languages due to Hong Kong’s multicultural population.
